Bridging the Gap between Modelling and New Policy Expectations
BPIE and Climact, commissioned by EIT Climate-KIC, were tasked with identifying key gaps between previous modeling approaches and the expectations for improved methods that align with Paris Agreement goals. The aim is to support policymakers in making informed decisions by understanding current possibilities and future actions. This work serves as a starting point rather than an exhaustive review, based on interviews with key European modeling teams and users, including policymakers and NGOs, supplemented by a survey for additional insights. The paper focuses on three main issues: aligning with below 2°C trajectories, overcoming policy barriers through modeling, and enhancing the connection between models and their practical use by policymakers.
